A New image of Women "Rosie the Riveter"

Rosie the Riveter was the first feminist icon , representing the American women who worked in factories during World War II when all the men were fighting the war. Mothers, daughters, secretaries, wives , even schoolgirls took on factory duties that the men left behind. These women helped build planes, bombs ,tanks and other weapons that would eventually help win WWII. Outside of factories women also became streetcar drivers , operated heavy construction machinery, worked in lumber and steel mills, unloaded freight and even more proving they could do the jobs known as "mens work" , they took over the industry and they did very well in it! This created an entirely new image of women in American society. These women got a taste of independence living their own lives , having their own money , being completely independent. These were the 40's;  and when the war ended they were no longer needed and to get the women out of the work force an illusion of the perfect life as a house wife and mother was created, house work in pearls and heels, this became the 50's.

1947 Proper White Glove Society on their best until Christian Dior

The proper white-gloved society women were on their best behavior until Dior created a dress with a plunging neckline dubbed the "cocktail dress" , a part of his evening collection , a new look which was very glamorous and it consisted of strapless boned tops with full skirts and were ultra feminine. Now in this "new look" of 1947 Christian Dior presented a fashion look that was a dramatic change from the wartime styles. After the rationing of fabric during the second World War Dior's lavish use of material was not only bold , but a shocking stroke.  Dior's timing made his name in fashion. After the war women longed for frivolity in dress and desired feminine clothes that didn't look like a civilian version of the military uniform. Dior's new look dominated the fashion world for about 10 years. This started a new era in Hollywood and Fashion , as the years progressed so did the fashion and the women wearing it , women were becoming more and more comfortable with looking like a woman while maintaining high social status with big names such as Christian Dior.

1920's- 1950's Society Girls and Hollywood Glamour

Everyone wanted to know how High Society was doing and so High Society became fashion. Every secretary wanted to be a model , it didn't pay much at all , but it was a name and social status, a stairway of high fashion , which lead to the stars. Most women in the 30's couldn't afford clothes so Hollywood glamour and fashion was like a fantasy at this time. The rich though was still very rich so they were the focal points, they were being watched constantly, everything they did was fashion and the movie stars became the fashion directors at this point, living a fashionable life so they were defined as fashion by visual.
